Hyaluronan Breakdown Contributes to Immune Defense
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: The role of hyaluronan catabolism in group A Streptococcus (GAS) infection has not been studied. Results: Hyaluronan size differentially influenced GAS infection in vitro and in mice. Conclusion: Digestion of hyaluronan derived from either the bacterium or host enhances host immune defense. Significance: Digestion of hyaluronan during GAS infection may be a previously unrecognized mechanism for host defense.

Differential regulation of hyaluronan-induced IL-8 and IP-10 in airway epithelial cells.
Airway epithelium is emerging as a regulator of local inflammation and immune responses. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for the immune modulation by these cells have yet to be fully elucidated. At the cellular level, the hallmarks of airway inflammation are mucus gland hypertrophy with excess mucus production, accumulation of inflammatory mediators, inflammation in t...
متن کاملMediators of Inflammation and Their Effect on Resident Renal Cells: Implications in Lupus Nephritis
Lupus nephritis affects up to 70% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. It is characterized by a breakdown of immune tolerance, production of autoantibodies, and deposition of immune complexes within the kidney parenchyma, resulting in local inflammation and subsequent organ damage. To date, numerous mediators of inflammation have been im...
متن کاملHSV ICP0 recruits USP7 to modulate TLR-mediated innate response.
Pattern recognition receptors represent the first line of defense against invading pathogens. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) encodes multiple ligands detected by these receptors, yet persists in the majority of infected individuals indicating a breakdown in host defense against the virus. Here we identify a novel mechanism through which HSV immediate-early protein ICP0 inhibits TLR-dependent inflam...
متن کاملGroup B Streptococcus Evades Host Immunity by Degrading Hyaluronan.
In response to tissue injury, hyaluronan (HA) polymers are cleaved by host hyaluronidases, generating small fragments that ligate Toll-like receptors (TLRs) to elicit inflammatory responses. Pathogenic bacteria such as group B Streptococcus (GBS) express and secrete hyaluronidases as a mechanism for tissue invasion, but it is not known how this activity relates to immune detection of HA. We fou...
متن کاملThe Where, When, How, and Why of Hyaluronan Binding by Immune Cells
Hyaluronan is made and extruded from cells to form a pericellular or extracellular matrix (ECM) and is present in virtually all tissues in the body. The size and form of hyaluronan present in tissues are indicative of a healthy or inflamed tissue, and the interactions of hyaluronan with immune cells can influence their response. Thus, in order to understand how inflammation is regulated, it is ...
